About 2006 Vermont Wilderness Bill

On April 6th, 2006 Senator Pat Leahy, Senator Jim Jeffords and Congressman Bernie Sanders introduced the 2006 Vermont Wilderness Bill which will designate 48,161 of protected wilderness within the 400,000 acres Green Mountain National Forest. Currently, about 60,000 acres of Wilderness exist on the national forest.

Conservationists applaud this move by Vermont's congressional delegation, but believe more designated Wilderness is needed for protection of wildlife habitat and ecological restoration; protection of clean water and the provision of other ecological services; unroaded, unmotorized areas for backcountry recreation; the preservation of wild places for the human spirit in an increasingly fast-paced, technological world; and for future generations.
